Can there be life without LIF?

Article Abstract:

Genetic inactivation of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) produces a uterine defect that bars the embryo from implanting itself in the uterine wall. LIF is a polypeptide growth factor with many biological effects. Colin L. Stewart and colleagues found that a complete lack of LIF profoundly affected female reproductive physiology. This finding, obtained using gene targeting on the embryonic stem cells of female mice, is likely to improve knowledge of uterine physiology during implantation and to help prevent abnormalities.

The quest for immortality

Article Abstract:

The life and growth of germ cells in culture can be prolonged using three growth factors: basic fibroblast growth factor, soluble leukemia inhibitory factor and the transmembrane form of steel factor for expression on the feeder layer. James L. Resnick and co-workers also found that the initial embryonic germ cells turn into cell colonies similar to embryonic stem cells that are usually obtained from embryonal carcinoma cells. This success with germ cells may lead to new transgenic technology.

Neuregulin-beta induces expression of an NMDA-receptor subunit

Article Abstract:

Neuregulins are a group of widely expressed growth and differentiation factors. The effects of neuregulins on the expression of genes encoding NMDA receptors in the cerebellum have been analyzed. The addition of a neuregulin-beta isoform to cultured cerebellar slices was found to specifically increase the expression of NR2C messenger RNAs.
