Cash shortfall threatens to rock US geophysics project

Article Abstract:

US Earth scientists fear that lack of funds could derail EarthScope, a megaproject to examine the geophysical structure of North America, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Although Congress authorized the NSF to buy and install the $200 million equipment over five years, it has delayed a decision on funding for the operation and maintenance.

France strives for sharper image

Article Abstract:

France is trying to attract entrepreneurial firms to invest in Paris in order to build stronger links in science, technology and innovation. The U.S. biotechnology leaders are still doubtful about France as a location for offshoring as there is a lack of willingness to take risks on venture capital and company formation.

US researchers fear job losses from privatization drive

Article Abstract:

The author reports that the United States scientists fear that the government's plan to contruct out federal scientific projects will damage the research. The critics of the plan say that the staff whose positions are privatized will lose their jobs if they are not rehired by the private companies.
