Ceiling principle 'not needed' in DNA cases

Article Abstract:

The National Academy of Sciences states that the ceiling principle will be abandoned for finding the probability of a suspect being mistakenly identified by DNA evidence. The waiving of the ceiling principle will provide prosecutors a direct and less conservative means to estimate the chances of mistaken identity. The removal of the ceiling principle is attributed to the abundance of data on different genetic populations for DNA cases. The Academy panel stresses the maintenance of high quality standards in DNA sample analysis.

Fusion researchers seek US role as partners in EU's JET facility

Article Abstract:

Fusion scientists in the US have recommended that the US joins the European Union's Joint European Torus (JET) in the UK, to benefit from the UK facility in testing and refining computer-based models for plasma confinement. The US is already discussing how to realign its fusion programme, and supporters of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), see the recommendation as an attempt to determine an alternative route for international fusion research collaboration, if ITER is not built.

Mentors seek to prove value for money

Article Abstract:

One hundred US teachers are receiving tuition from scientists to prove that teaching standards can be improved with ongoing education. The elementary school teachers, and hundreds more like them, are taking part in the National Science Foundation's (NSF's) Carnegie Academy for Science Education programme. The NSF disputes the government's General Accounting Office report that says that programmes of this kind are ineffectual and costly.
