Channel gating governed symmetrically by conserved leucine residues in the M2 domain of nicotinic receptors

Article Abstract:

The conserved leucine residues in nicotinic receptors' M2 (9') domains appear to be an important part of the channel gating mechanism. Closed channels have Leu 9' residues occluding the conduction pathway while opening channels rotate the Leu 9' side chains away from the pathway. Sensitivity to agonists is increased and desensitization is slowed when the Leu 9' residue is mutated to other residues. The mutated and wildtype Leu 9' residues are compared using stoichiometry of muscle in naChR.

P2X receptors as cell-surface ATP sensors in health and disease

Article Abstract:

Discoveries regarding P2X receptors, membrane ion channels activated by adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-binding, reveal that they play an important role in the nervous system, afferent signaling, chronic pain, and in autocrine loops of endothelial and epithelial cells. They have a distinct molecular structure and unique functional properties, of possible use in novel therapeutics for human diseases.

State-dependent cross-inhibition between transmitter-gated cation channels

Article Abstract:

A study of transmitter-gated cation channels is presented with reference to their use as detectors. The influence of structurally independent channels on each other is discussed in particular their state-dependent cross-inhibition.
