Charity cools on stem cells after boycott by Catholics

Article Abstract:

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has withdrawn for a coalition that is lobbying Congress to support research using human embryonic stem cells. The ACS has been under pressure not to participate following a report that human embryonic stem cells had been isolated, and the Department of Health and Human Services ruling that federal funding of stem cell research is allowed if their derivation is privately funded and restricted to the use of spare embryos from fertility clinics.

Congress may block stem-cell research

Article Abstract:

The Secretary of Health and Human Services, Donna Shalala has been criticized over her decision allowing federal funding of stem-cell research, by anti-abortion members of Congress. This follows the legal opinion of Harriet Rabb, the general counsel of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), that stem-cell research is exempt from the current federal funding ban on embryo research.

Embryonic stem-cell research exempt from ban, NIH is told

Article Abstract:

The US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is of the opinion that research on human embryonic stem cells is exempt from a ban on federal funding for human embryo research, as such cells are not organisms, as described in the legislation. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is planning to establish guidelines for those applying for funding for stem-cell research.
