Cloning and expression of a rat brain L-glutamate transporter

Article Abstract:

A complementary DNA that provides the genetic information for the L-glutamate neurotransmitter has been fully characterized. The new clone, derived from the immunoscreening of rat brain tissue and designated pT7-GLT-1, assists in synaptic transmission among vertebrates by prompting the secretion of L-glutamate, the chief excitatory transmitter. Furthermore, the clone's sequence should produce a protein whose 573 amino acids render it distinct from any previously discovered transport molecule.

Intimate contact enables transport

Article Abstract:

Ion-coupled transporters necessary for all forms of life carry cargoes across membranes to help gather foodstuff in cells and facilitate communication between nerve cells. Transporters move their substrates like sugar, amino acids, and neurotransmitters against concentration gradients, which is achieved using the energy stored in the electrochemical ion gradients maintained across cell membranes.
