Cooper's hawks in urban and exurban areas: a reply

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the breeding ecology of Cooper's hawks in urban and exurban ares of southeastern Arizona are discussed. Concerns about the calculation of survival of nestling-fledgling Cooper's hawks in urban and exurban areas with different methods are addressed.

Influence of natal experience on nest-site selection by urban-nesting Cooper's hawks

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to examine whether there is evidence that Cooper's hawks (Aceipiter cooperii) hatched in an urban locations choose sites with features similar to their natal areas when they nest for the first time. Some evidence is found that being hatched in a specific tree species influenced choice of tree species at first breeding sites for males, but the influence was weak.

Comparative breeding ecology of Cooper's hawks in urban and exurban areas of southeastern Arizona

Article Abstract:

Cooper's hawks in Tucson, AZ, and in exurban areas in the southeastern part of the state were studied from 1994 to 1996 to compare their breeding ecology and productivity, with the end in view of assessing the quality of an urban environment as habitat for a species. Nesting was earlier for urban pairs and their clutches larger than exurban pairs. Urban nests were also found to have higher nesting mortality, with trichomoniasis as the primary cause of death. Urban nests also had a greater overall failure rate than exurban nests.
