Competition for royalty in bees

Article Abstract:

The variance observed for reproductive dominance in honeybees, Apis mellifera, is due to between-family effects. DNA fingerprinting of four queenless splits of two A. mellifera capensis shows that the majority of the patrilines disappeared after dequeening. Only some worker are capable of producing offspring. The colonies consisting of only dominant workers fail to produce fertile offspring because there are no subordinate workers to take care of the adults and the broods. An equilibrium of the dominant and subordinate is necessary to maintain a colonial homeostasis.

Beetle larvae cooperate to mimic bees

Article Abstract:

Larvae of the blister beetle Meloe franciscanus display both cooperative behaviour and mimicry, according to new research. The larvae group together on leaves to mimic the appearance of a female bee, to be picked up by male bees and transmitted to a real female bee as a form of venereal parasitization.
