Compromise sought on 'Terminator'...

Article Abstract:

Trait-specific Genetic Use Restriction Technology (T-Gurt), an alternative to the controversial Terminator technology, which involves seeds being genetically modified to become sterile after one season's planting, has received a mixed reaction from scientific advisers to the United Nations Biodiversity Convention. Scientists from African countries have linked with conservation groups to call on the convention's scientific advisers not to back T-Gurt until it has been shown that this technology does not damage human health or the environment.

Kyoto agreement creates new agenda for climate research

Article Abstract:

The adoption of the Kyoto protocol on climate change has been welcomed by climate scientists, and scientific advisory bodies have been asked to provide solutions to immediate challenges. These relate to how greenhouse gas emissions will be measured and verified and a mechanism for trading emissions. An immediate task will be to balance the Earth's carbon budget, as there is currently a discrepancy between the combined inventory of carbon emissions and the amount of carbon thought to be absorbed by the atmosphere and oceans.

Physicist will sue Internet providers over 'libellous' remarks

Article Abstract:

A draft legislation will be incorporated in the United Kingdom to protect the guiltless Internet providers from any legal proceedings for maligning remarks conveyed through or held on bulletin boards. A British physics professor is currently filing libel writs against two Internet providers for failing to censor alleged libellous remarks. However, Internet libel cases are rare especially in the US and Canada because of free speech protections.
