Congress hearings used as 'scientific court.'(critique on integrity of science associated with key environmental issues)

Article Abstract:

The three congress hearings dealing with ozone depletion, global warming and the danger of dioxins initiate a critique on the integrity of the science associated with key environmental issues. George Brown, the senior Democrat on the Science Committee in the US House of Representatives argues that the scepticism against science is an assault on the peer-review system and the scientific process. The hearings fail to confirm bias in scientific studies. However, sceptics testify against the prevailing scientific consensus on ozone depletion.

Congress backs home for orphaned agencies

Article Abstract:

The US House Science Committee proposed the establishment of a new, independent agency called the Science and Technology Administration to absorb the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, if the Dept of Commerce is abolished. However, the move was criticized by Democrats saying that the establishment of this agency would negate any savings generated by abolishing the Department of Commerce and so is a purely political move by Republicans.

Congress wrestles with electronic highway bill

Article Abstract:

The US Senate is still debating over the fate of government operated prototype information networks that would be used by schools, libraries and government departments. Scientists fear that a provision regarding these networks would interrupt on their research work. The said bill was proposed by the telecommunications industry and would prohibit the use of these prototypes if commercial alternatives are available.
