Conservation science and public policy: only the beginning

Article Abstract:

Conservation scientists would do well to make their voice heard by policymakers in a more sophisticated and organized way. If the science of conservation is to have more than an occasional and rather fortuitous influence on major environmental policy the ongoing tension between idealism and pragmatism will have to give way to some kind of organized voice despite some disagreements. Habitat conservation plans being pursued in the US may be giveaways to corporate landowners driven by politics disguised as progressive policy.

Crisis in a crisis discipline

Article Abstract:

The process of timely, independent, critical review is approaching crisis in the conservation biology field, a field that must be quick if it is to influence species extinction rates, habitat loss, and the human condition. To be an influence it must get information out through a selective process ensuring quality, but getting good, critical reviews in a timely manner is increasingly difficult. Journal readers must undertake reviewing and be speedy.
