Conservation spotlight: a butterfly ranch takes flight in Costa Rica

Article Abstract:

The butterfly ranching program in Costa Rica is an economic incentive program for the protection of wild butterflies and their rainforest habitat. The program involves teaching butterfly ranching, attracting tourists, and giving the tourism and export money to the people of Barra del Colorado. The whole community is involved in the program, including children and older residents. Residents plant nectar and host plants, so that butterflies are drawn from the adjacent rainforests. The live butterfly house attracts tourists, and extra pupae are sold to zoos and aquariums, to increase export profits.

Conservation spotlight: the Attwater's prairie chicken

Article Abstract:

The US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and other conservation organizations jointly support the regeneration program for the Attwater's prairie chicken through captive breeding and habitat protection. Deterioration of the chicken population is due to the cumulative effect of poaching, and habitat loss due to overgrazing and industrial expansion. The recovery program begins in the breeding season with the hatching of eggs collected from the wild. The program plans to restore a genetically viable population of at least 5000 individuals in different states.
