Conservation value and rankings of exotic species

Article Abstract:

The separation of native and non native species in all floral and faunal lists is suggested even though efforts in the past have failed to make such a distinction clear, with some failing to distinguish between native and non native populations. Species ranking systems will not eliminate exotic species, but it is useful to flag a species as native or non-native at some stage in the priority -setting process.

Effects of rock climbing on cliff plant communities at Joshua Tree National Park, California

Article Abstract:

Researchers compared the plant communities on cliffs of Joshua Tree National Park that are used for rock climbing with those cliffs not used for climbing. They compared 18 cliffs, six with no climbing, 6 with moderate climbing, and 6 with intensive climbing, to sample their plant diversity and community structure. They found that the number of plants decreased with increased climbing activity.

Conservation of the toromiro tree: Case study in the management of a plant extinct in the wild

Article Abstract:

The history and conservation of Sophora toromiro, an extinct species of a tree are discussed. The best short-term opportunity for the species is through conventional horticultural management in botanic gardens and traditional farm plots on Rapa Nui, Easter Island. These taxa need conservation management on priority basis.
