Contrasting origins of the upper mantle revealed by hafnium and lead isotopes from the Southeast Indian Ridge

Article Abstract:

The origin of isotopic signature of Indian mid-ocean ridge basalts has remained enigmatic, because the geochemical composition of these basalts is consistent either with pollution from recycled, ancient altered oceanic crust and sediments or with ancient continental crust or lithosphere. The radiogenic isotopic signature may be the result of contamination of the upper mantle by plumes containing recycled altered ancient oceanic crust and sediments.

Chaotic topography, mantle flow and mantle migration in the Australian - Antarctic discordance

Article Abstract:

Research shows that the chaotic sea-floor topography at the eastern Australian-Antarctic discordance (AAD) was flooded with magma during the past three and four million years, resulting in normal sea floor topography. Historical mantle migration patterns at the AAD are described. Geochemical boundaries are established and illustrated.
