Cooperation wins and stays

Article Abstract:

Game theorists have experimented with various strategies to arrive at the best formula which would bring about cooperation among egoistic nations that do not cooperate with others even on issues of global importance. Prisoners' Dilemma, a game of cooperation, applies strategies to make the partner cooperate, but algebra cannot determine the ideal strategy. Axelrod, a game theorist, adopted a computer game based on the theory of evolution to test different strategies and selected 'Tit for tat' as the best strategy.

Controversial cancer drug wins local approval in Italy

Article Abstract:

Puglia, a region in southern Italy, is planing to offer somatostatin, an expensive drug, free to cancer patients, although the drug does not have proven efficacy in most cancers and is not a reimbursable drug. Luigi Di Bella, a physician, argued that cancer cures can only be achieved by stimulating the body's self-healing properties, and he tailors a cocktail of drugs and vitamins, always including somatostatin, to suit individual patients. He claims to have cured many patients using this approach.

Biodegradable block copolymers as injectable drug-delivery systems

Article Abstract:

Researchers have been able to synthesize a thermosensitive, biodegradable hydrogel made up of blocks of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(L-lactic acid). This development is particularly useful for the delivery of high-M1 protein drugs which have a low diffusion coefficient. These polymers have both thermosensitivity and biodegradability, and this makes them appropriate for a solvent-free injectable system which can be used as a controlled drug carrier.
