Copycats gear up to dog biotech brands

Article Abstract:

A bill to sanction generic versions of biologics, the complex medicines made by the biotechnology industry was introduced on 29 September 2006 in the US Congress. If the bill is passed, it will give authority to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve applications to sell generic biological drugs or biosimilars.

Painkiller in the dock

Article Abstract:

Merck, a New York based company, is defending an allegation that its blockbuster painkiller Vioxx killed Robert Ernst, a 59-year-old personal trainer from Keene. Merck defended itself by revealing that from the beginning it has followed Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety regulations while making Vioxx.

How does the painkiller harm the heart?

Article Abstract:

The painkiller Vioxx and its cousin were found to cause heart attacks by tipping a crucial hormonal balance. Analysis from the Canadian study found that Vioxx's adverse effects kicked in almost immediately and also atherosclerosis could be caused through Vioxx in the people.
