Correlation between neural spike trains increases with firing rate

Article Abstract:

The correlations between the discharges of two neurons are determined by computing the spike train correlation coefficient of unconnected pairs of in vitro cortical neurons receiving correlated inputs. The connectivity between the rate and correlation of spiking activity has linked two fundamental features of the neural code.

Precise auditory-vocal mirroring in neurons for learned vocal communication

Article Abstract:

The importance of the precise auditory-vocal mirroring in neurons to facilitate learned vocal communication in swamp sparrow is discussed. Such neurons are found to innervate striatal structures that are helpful in song learning.

Non-classical receptive field mediates switch in a sensory neuron's frequency tunning

Article Abstract:

It is shown that stimuli of different spatial extents mimicking prey and communication signals cause a switch in the frequency tuning. This phenomenon results in the selective and optimal encoding of both stimulus categories.
