Costs of egg ventilation for male common gobies breeding in conditions of low dissolved oxygen

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the effects of rough environment conditions on life history trade-offs in parental care of the common goby scientifically named Pomatoschistus microps. Results indicate that male parental care increases the harsher environmental conditions become. This was exemplified by the male goby in a low oxygen environment where they spent more time fanning water over their eggs to increase ventilation, and thus, protecting their eggs.

The influence of oxygen stress on female choice for male nest structure in the common goby

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the effects of dissolved oxygen in varying female choice for male nest structure in the common goby. Under normal oxygen conditions, female gobies tend to be attracted to male gobies that build nests with the smallest entrance which they are able to successfully ventilate. Low oxygen environments, however, prompt female gobies to choose mates than can provide more parental care to their eggs.

The effects of sex ratio on sexual competition in the European lobster

Article Abstract:

Adult sex ratios of the European lobster Homarus gammarus were manipulated to test models that relate sexual competition to the sex ratio, the an individual is not available to mate and collateral investment. Model predictions were relatively insensitive to collateral investment, and male-male competition predominated in the male-biased, but not the female-biased sex ratio, matching the predictions of one model.
