Crowns get organized

Article Abstract:

It is possible to use modular synthesis to link a tailored organic host with well-defined inorganic scaffolding. This allows a crystalline network to nucleate and grow, and can make it possible to produce a lamellar solid made of zirconium phosphate sheets held apart by crown ether molecules. Researchers found that it is vital to control both the kinetics and the thermodynamics of the assembly process. There have been significant developments in this field, including the engineering of 'hinged' networks capable of adapting themselves to the inclusion of different-size guests.

Mimicry with gold

Article Abstract:

Gold can be used to synthesize analogues of many gitonic dications, formed as temporary intermediates in the reactions catalyzed by superacids. The analogue of the diprotonated water, (H4O)2+, is formed by using an Au(I) fragment as an isolobal substitute for H+. Au analogues of CH5+, CH6+, diprotonated methane, and NH5+ have also been prepared. Although these gitonic dications are unstable, the Au analogues are stable due to Au-Au binding.

Synthesis undressed

Article Abstract:

The removal of temporary protecting groups from fragile chemical groups is a challenge in organic synthesis. A study reveals a method of efficiently synthesizing complex natural products with reduced use of protecting groups, indicating a possibility of innovative developments using these 'undressed' or unprotected molecules.
