Deoxycytidyl transferase activity of yeast REV1 protein

Article Abstract:

The Escherichia coli Rev1 protein transfers a dCMP residue from dCTP to the 3' end of a DNA primer, through deoxycytidyl transferase activity, in a template-dependent reaction. Effective transfer occurs opposite a template abasic site. However, about 20% transfer occurs opposite a template guanine, about 10% opposite adenine or uracil and about 1% opposite thymine or cytosine. The terminus produced opposite an abasic site by cytosine insertion is extended by DNA polymerase-zeta but not DNA polymerase-alpha.

Phospholipids and the origins of cationic gating charges in voltages sensors

Article Abstract:

A study shows that the function of a voltage-dependent [K.sup.} channel is dependent on the negatively charged phosphodiester of phospholipid molecules under a variety of conditions. The phospholipid membrane has provided an appropriate environment for the energetic stability and operation of the voltage-sensing machinery, suggesting that the usage of arginine residues in voltage sensors is an adaptation to the phospholipid composition of cell membranes.
