Cumulative long-term investment in vocalization and mating success of fallow bucks, Dama dama

Article Abstract:

The males of many species use vocal display during the breeding season but it is not clear how the calls are used in intersexual or intrasexual communication. A new study of fallow bucks, Dama dama, examines the timing of vocalization and the dominance of individuals before and after they begin vocalizing. The study shows that most matings were achieved by high ranking bucks which began vocal activity early in the season and which vocalized on most days. It is shown that there is a strong link between mating success and the period of vocal display.

Synchronous polyandry and multiple paternity in the frog Crinia georgiana (Anura: Myobatrachidae)

Article Abstract:

There have only been three documented examples of multiple paternity for anuran amphibians, but this may be more common among frogs than realized. Synchronous polyandry was observed for an average 44% of matings of Crinia georgiana. Several males were in amplex at the time when eggs were deposited, and males at an equal distance from eggs had similar chances of success in fertilizing the eggs. Two matings were genetically analyzed and between tow and three males could have fathered the results.

Evidence of convergent character displacement in release vocalizations of Bufo fowleri and Bufo terrestris (Anura; Bufonidae)

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the vocalizations of toads and their importance in the prompt release of males during heterospecific amplexus. The use of advertisement vocalizations is discussed.
