Czechs revise policy on research funding, aim for a more Western approach

Article Abstract:

The Czech Republic's new government is working toward a comprehensive science policy that emphasizes the Western-style allocation of research funds based on competitive bidding. The government is also considering a Dec 1992 EC report that evaluated various strategies for promoting science and technology. This report stressed the importance of university research in the short term, the long-term economic importance of practical research on technology and the dangers of an excessively free-market strategy.
