DNA fingerprint variation and reproductive fitness in the Plain pigeon

Article Abstract:

The correlation between DNA fingerprint variation and reproductive fitness in the Plain pigeon (Columba inornata wetmorei) has been investigated in conjunction with a captive breeding program in Puerto Rico. The 20 surviving founders of the breeding program had band differences (APD) characteristic of first-order relatives. The study suggests that DNA fingerprints can be used to select pairings of birds in a captive breeding program, although the sample size was small.
