Dangers of Euro-relevance

Article Abstract:

The European Commission's fifth Framework programme of research places very strong emphasis on economic and social benefits. Scientists seeking funding in energy and environment, life sciences, industrial technologies or information technologies, the programme's four areas, will have to show a problem of socio-economic significance and indicate that they will address this problem from as many angles as are required to resolve it. Some European Commission officials believe that many scientists will assess the outcome of the first round of proposals before investing a lot of time in preparing applications.

How could EU research be improved?

Article Abstract:

A consistency in the policy formulated by the European Union (EU) would be pivotal in the support and development of European research. An explicit science policy, with a greater clarity of purpose in terms of funding research project would come as a welcome change, and help in its smooth operation. The EU should provide the financial assistance to develop the infrastructure required for research in all European countries. EU's finance is required for improvement of basic health for humans, animals, pollution and agriculture.

Europe's black sheep

Article Abstract:

Greece, Portugal and Ireland spend very little on research and development. The UK, France and Germany spend huge amounts on space and military research. A collaboration will be beneficial if all the member nations make an equal contribution. The smaller nations can train people to work in research laboratories, while the rich nations provide the laboratories.
