Death by decapitation for mRNA

Article Abstract:

The varying half-life lengths among various messenger RNA (mRNA) species result from the functions of various mRNA-specific sequences and mRNA-binding proteins which lead to degradation of mRNAs. The 7-methylguanosine cap and the homopolymer of up to 200 adenosine nucleotides (poly(A) tail) are two natural barriers to mRNA degradation. Two major mRNA degradative pathways in yeast are the deadenylation-dependent pathways and non-deadenylation-dependent pathways. The rates of deadenylation and decapping of mRNA influence the stability of mRNA.

Prion recognition elements govern nucleation, strain specificity and species barriers

Article Abstract:

Surface-bound arrays of prion peptides are used for analyzing the relationship between prion strains and species barriers and the Saccharonyces cerevisiae Sup35 sequence is used for identifying critical prion recognition elements in yeast species. The recognition of elements identified by using peptide arrays has governed nucleation, the formation of distant prion strains and the capacity of prions to cross species-specific transmission barriers.

Certain brain diseases are associated with some infectious agents known as prions. Some critical questions about prion biology occurring in mammals and fungi are solved through experiments conducted.
