Design and synthesis of an exceptionally stable and highly porous metal-organic framework

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to synthesize a metal-organic framework which remains crystalline and stable when completely disolvated and when heated up to 300 degrees C. An X-ray single-crystal diffraction study on the as-synthesized materials reveals a structure that may be derived from a basic cubic six-connected net in two stages. The nodes of the net are replaced by clusters of secondary building units, and the links of the net are then replaced by finite rods of 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate molecules. The core of the cluster is made up of a single O atom bonded to four Zn atoms, creating a regular Zn4O tetrahedron.

Starting from first principles

Article Abstract:

A recent study on the reactivity of acidic zeolites has explained why the behavior of these catalysts vary when the only difference lies in their aluminosilicate framework structures. Quantum chemical techniques and lattice energy minimization methods were combined to predict reactivities. Results indicate that acidic zeolite behavior is a function of proton affinity between two adjacent oxygen atoms in the active site.
