Designs on Rubisco

Article Abstract:

Rubisco, an enzyme in photosynthesis that is responsible for the conversion of inorganic carbon, as [Co.sub.2], into organic compounds, has the reputation of being slow and inefficient, because of its mechanism of selecting C[O.sub.2] over [O.sub.2]. Scientists have come up with an explanatory mechanism for the trade-off usually observed between the specificity factor (a ratio indicating selectivity for C[O.sub.2] over [O.sub.2]) and the rate of enzyme turnover.

The art of splitting water

Article Abstract:

The article discusses a new approach for the synthesis of several new catalysts that can facilitate the first part of the splitting reaction-water oxidation in artificial photosynthesis. The findings show that the water oxidation and splitting is extremely difficult and hence require a catalyst for the operation.
