Despite early fears, first Republican budget cuts bode well for science

Article Abstract:

The budget for basic scientific research remains unaffected in the first round of Republic budget cuts in the US Congress. This support for basic research appeases early fears of the scientific community, strengthening hopes that the major science agencies will not be targeted for financial cutback by the new Republican majority. These decisions will, however, disrupt other proposals to construct research laboratories and industrial technology programs.

US budget 'freezes' spending on research

Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton has proposed a 2% budget rise for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the lowest rise for many years. The National Science Foundation (NSF) will receive a 7% increase in its research budget, although over half of that will go towards a new, multi-agency initiative in information technology. The proposals mean that the objective that civilian and military research and development should have equal funding will be met.

Press panel recommends a unified budget for science

Article Abstract:

A panel headed by Frank Press has rejected the concept of a Department of Science, as promoted by Republicans. The panel seeks to reform the science-funding structure and suggest a greater role for White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The National Research Council, which published the report, proposes a new program for tightly budgeting science and technology.
