Dietary overlap between native sitka black-tailed deer and introduced elk in southeast Alaska

Article Abstract:

The transplantation of elk from Oregon to southeast Alaska in 1985 was criticized by biologists who were worried about possible competition with the native Sitka black-tailed deer. Little research has been undertaken into these introductions on native flora. A new study investigates the winter food habits of black-tailed deer and the non-native elk to determine whether the diets of the two species compete. The study shows that elk eat more grasses than deer, although a high dietary overlap exists. It is suggested that severe winters could cause competition between the two species, but deer are unlikely to be totally displaced.

Behavioral response of free-ranging elk treated with an immunocontraceptive vaccine

Article Abstract:

Most previous wildlife contraceptive studies have examined the effect of such treatment on an individual but there is little understanding of the behavioural effects of blocking conception. A study of free-range elk in southcentral Washington, vaccinated with porcine zona pellucidar (PZP), investigates the behavioural implications of inhibiting conception. The hypothesis that PZP-treated cows would have prolonged breeding behaviour due to repeated estrus cycling is tested. The study shows that recurrent estrus is not damaging to activity patterns or social structure.

Urinary allantoin: creatinne ratios as a dietary index for elk

Article Abstract:

Recent research into the relation between digestible dry matter intake and urinary allantoin:creatinine ratios in elk found a clear curvilinear reaction between urinary allantoin:creatinine ratios and digestible dry matter intake. The findings, which were achieved using 18, two-year-old cow elk divided into three groups, indicate that the study of digestible dry matter intake in free-ranging elk may be usefully assisted by considering urinary allantoin:creatinine ratios.
