Different paths to the same end

Article Abstract:

The capacity of the regulatory architecture, which underlies the evolution of diversity of life forms on earth, to diverge while the overlying phenotypes remain similar, is examined. A study conducted by scientists through genetic dissection of a yeast gene-regulatory pathway reveals that the logical output of such a pathway can remain the same even though the molecular mechanisms underlying the output have diverged remarkably.

The genome of the choanoflagellate Monosiga brevicollis and the origin of metazoans

Article Abstract:

The genome of the choanoflagellate Monosiga brevicollis is sequenced and analyzed to explain the various mechanisms involved in the evolution of metazoan multicellularity. The results show that the separation of the choanoflagellate and metazoan lineages was a result of an abundant domain shuffling.

Genome-scale approaches to resolving incongruence in molecular phylogenies

Article Abstract:

The genome sequences of eight yeast species were screened in order to systematically investigate the degree of incongruence. It is suggested that data sets consisting of single or a small number concatenated genes have a significant probability of supporting conflicting topologies.
