Don't keep your distance

Article Abstract:

The US Institute of Medicine (IOM) has directed researchers who work with human subjects, to manage the delicate relationship between researchers and their subjects, since science depends on public support, which in turn depends on their belief that research benefits them. Researchers working with the disadvantaged populations should become more involved with the communities they study, where partners can help researchers by highlighting flaws in study design and with other assistance.

Waiting for the second coming

Article Abstract:

The need to revitalize contraceptive research is discussed due to inconsistent use of effective methods and a discontinuation rate approaching 50 %. Consequently, successive reports issued over more than a decade by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) show that a second contraceptive revolution is sorely needed and the high discontinuation rate shows that consumers want a safer, more effective and more user friendly contraceptive.
