Drug company 'suppressed' publication of research

Article Abstract:

Boots Company PLC, UK, prevented the publication of an article on a comparative study of Synthroid and three alternative drugs, fearing damage to the multi-million dollar sales of its thyroid drug. Boots asked researcher Betty Dong to withdraw the paper scheduled to appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dong and her co-workers at the University of California at San Francisco, (UCSF) found that all the drugs were absorbed into the blood in the same way. UCSF initially supported Dong but later withdrew its support due to her agreement with Boots.

Fear of BSE risks could hit US blood banks

Article Abstract:

US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisors are considering whether people who have spent time in Britain since 1980 should be prevented from donating blood, in an attempt to reduce the theoretical risk of introducing new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) into the US. However there are already problems obtaining sufficient blood supplies and making exclusion would reduce the blood supply by 10.7% according to an American Red Cross official.
