Drugs merger seeks strength in breadth

Article Abstract:

The merger currently being discussed by Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham would form a single pharmaceutical company, combining expertise in chemistry, biology and genomics. Combinatorial chemistry is one of Glaxo Wellcome's strengths, while SmithKline Beecham was one of the first companies to make major investments in genomics and bioinformatics. Glaxo Wellcome has launched 28 drugs for development during the past two years, with 80% still in the pipeline.

Radical changes urged in UK curriculum

Article Abstract:

The UK's Nuffield Foundation has published a report on the school science curriculum that urges the government to allow pupils to spend more time developing original ideas and less time memorizing facts. The report suggests that pupils should be taught how to discriminate between good and bad science. Critics of the report say that it will lower standards, although many agree that the current science curriculum fails to address the future needs of pupils.
