Drying-mediated self-assembly of nanoparticles

Article Abstract:

Calculations showing how different choices of solvent, nanoparticle size and the thermodynamic state gave rise to the various morphologies of the final structures are explained. A coarse-grained model of nanoparticle self-assembly that explicitly includes the dynamics of the evaporating solvent is also presented.

Low-velocity zone atop the 410-km seismic discontinuity in the northwestern United States

Article Abstract:

The low velocity zone found on the top of the 410-km discontinuity beneath the northwestern United States has a thickness that varies from 20 to 90 km with rapid lateral variations. This low velocity zone is interpreted as a compositional anomaly, possibly due to a dense partial-melt layer.

Illuminating behaviour

Article Abstract:

Metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are considered to be ideal one-dimensional systems for realizing Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid (TLL) states. Angle-integrated photoemission measurements of SWNTs are reported.
