EC hankers after more Framework research spending

Article Abstract:

The EC members endorse the president, Jacques Delors' plans to spend more on research and development in Europe. The EC will invest US $6.1 billion on European information infrastructure. The members have been given time till Sept 1993 to express their views on the plan, which will be finalized at the next community summit in Dec 1993. The members feel that more attention should be paid to research on replenishable energy resources and on the effect of waste disposal on the environment.

Free telecommunications

Article Abstract:

The European Community must be quick in implementing the liberalization of its telecommunications industry in order to keep abreast with the latest technological advances in the field. The future use of earth satellites and cable TV networks in mobile phone communications will eventually pave the way for the influx of foreign companies. This is the right time for breaking down monopolies and increase competition among telecommunications firms.

Europe's research

Article Abstract:

Antonio Ruberti has become the new head of research on the European Commission, and he should work with the European Science Foundation (ESF) and its associated European research councils to foster scientific research. The council heads met in Bonn, Germany in Jan, 1993 and considered the EC role in research, and whether the ESF could become 'a common instrument' for European research. Ruberti should take them up on the idea.
