Ecological importance of the Southern Boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to establish the importance of the southernmost reaches of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current to a food web of the Southern Ocean. The asymmetrical circumpolar distribution of krill matches the asymmetry of the poleward extent of the Southern Boundary between ocean basins, while the broad, circumpolar distributions of whales from spring to midsummer reflect the non-uniform high-latitude penetration of Upper Circumpolar Deep Water. The existence of balaenopterids and sperm whales at the Southern Boundary suggests that processes there could boost the availability of krill and cephalopods.

The importance of academic freedom

Article Abstract:

Global states should respect the principle of academic freedom and should take adequate measures to support academic research without interfering. Academic liberty has remained an entrenched principle in history but is now facing serious threats from political, social and religious constraints. Governments and sponsors should ensure that academic freedom is granted at all times by assuring academics of their social importance and by offering grants to academic research.

Academic inequality

Article Abstract:

The University of Oxford's academic council addressed the issue of creating equality between men and women in the academic circle in its May 1993 meeting. Women in Oxford University rebelled against its plans to promote 15 men as professors without considering women for the post. The equal opportunity policies of Harvard and Oxford have yet to result in the award of a professorship to a woman.
