Effect of bed morphology of flow mixing length at river confluences

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the measurements of bed morphology from three river confluences indicates that the flow mixing rates at the river confluences is increased by the bed discordance. The flow mixing problem is important since it determines the extent of pollutant dispersal and river system management. The measurements are obtained from flume experiments that consider the width-to-depth ratio of a river and the height discordance in the river. The analysis reveals that the mixing occurs within a short range of the confluence.

A commotion over turbulence

Article Abstract:

Turbulent transport is feared to affect the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), the largest fusion project being designed. This contradicts the successful elimination of turbulent transport in the plasma core, considered as the key scientific achievement in fusion research in 1996. This apparent contradiction can be addressed by designing and constructing the ITER in such a way that it is flexible enough to incorporate new physical developments.
