Effect of body weight, antler length, resource value and experience on fight duration and intensity in fallow deer

Article Abstract:

The effects of body weight and antler size, resource value and fighting experience on fight duration and intensity beween competing fallow deer during the annual breeding season are discussed. The duration and intensity provides an insight into the motivational level of competing males, as it provides an index of the willingness of two animals to persist in a potentially dangerous encounter.

David's score: a more appropriate dominance ranking method than Clutton-Brock et al.'s index

Article Abstract:

David's score (DS) and Clutton-Brock et al.'s index (CBI) are the two ranking methods that are used for ranking the members of a social group in a dominance hierarchy. The DS is recommended, as it reduces to row-sum scoring, for calculating dominance ranks based on interaction success as CBI lacks this desirable property.

Is the parallel walk between competing male fallow deer, Dama dama, a lateral display of individual quality?

Article Abstract:

The context and role of the parallel walk by male fallow deer, Dama dama during competitive encounters is examined. The hypotheses that the parallel walk is a lateral display of body size or weaponry or that it use is associated with a reduced level of escalated or risky behaviors during fighting is examined.
