Effective leadership and decision-making in animal groups on the move

Article Abstract:

Animals that travel in groups have an effective leadership and decision-making ability for making movement decisions, which highly depends on social interactions among group members. The model is discussed that provides an insight into the mechanisms of effective leadership and decision-making in biological systems.

Continuous activity in cetaceans after birth

Killer-whale and bottlenose-dolphin neonates and their mothers show little or no typical sleep behavior for the first postpartum month, avoiding obstacles, and remaining mobile for 24 hours a day. The exceptional wakefulness of newborn whales and dolphins has no ill-effect on their development.

Whale-call response to masking boat noise

Article Abstract:

The vocal behavior in the presence and absence of whale-watcher boat traffic of three social groups of killer whales living in the near shore waters of Washington State is investigated. Results indicate longer call durations for all three social groups in the presence of boats.
