Effectiveness of a selective harvest system in regulating deer populations in Ontario

Article Abstract:

Sex-selective harvest have often been used by wildlife management agencies in order to regulate white-tailed deer populations, however only a few have documented its effectiveness. The ability of wildlife mangers to control the size of antlerless harvest using sex-selective permits and their ability, in turn, to control changes in deer density is analyzed.

Home range and population density of fishers in Eastern Ontario

Article Abstract:

A study to assess the effect of the current harvest quota on a fisher population in eastern Ontario by estimating home range size and population density from sample of radiocollared animals is illustrated. Results suggest that though the density and harvest rate are high, an increase in quota is unwarranted.

Forestry matters: decline of oaks will impact wildlife in hardwood forests

Article Abstract:

Maintenance of oak and sustaining the diversity and productivity of hardwood forest is a growing concern since acorns are arguably the most impotent food resource for birds and mammals during the dormant season in hardwood ecosystems.
