Effects of a commercial baitworm harvest on semipalmated sandpipers and their prey in the Bay of Fundy hemispheric shorebird reserve

Article Abstract:

Baitworm harvesting has a significant impact on feeding behaviors and migratory capabilities of shorebirds. Research on sandpipers indicates that removal of baitworms disturbs shoreline habitat, interfering with sandpiper foraging. It also decreases the availability of worms as food, lowering sandpiper ability to ingest and deposit sufficient fat loads needed to survive migration.
