Effects of ear-tagging with radiotransmitters on survival of moose calves

Article Abstract:

The effects of marking newborn moose calves with plastic ear tags and radiotransmitters mounted on ear tags on survival were investigated. The objective was to ascertain whether the radiotransmitters influence survival in moose calves from birth to the beginning of the autumn hunting season. Results showed that calves with ear transmitters had lower survival rates than those with ear tags and those without radiotransmitters and ear tags. There was no difference in survival rates between control calves and calves with ear tags.

Effects of ear-tagging with radiotransmitters on survival of moose calves

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken among moose calves in five forested areas in Sweden indicates that marking moose calves with ear transmitters can lead to higher mortality rates than among calves with ear tags or unmarked calves. This effect is not relatively greater where there are bears. The precise reason why mortality rises in calves with ear transmitters is not known, but it could be linked with the calves' ability to deal with the transmitter or to changes in the relationship between the calf and its mother.

Predation on moose calves by European brown bears

Article Abstract:

European brown bears predations on moose calves in Sweden were examined. Results concluded that Swedish wildlife managers should include the effects of brown bear predation in their moose population models where bears are common.
