Effects of helicopter noise on Mexican spotted owls

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken within the Sacramento Ranger District of the Lincoln National Forest in southcentral New Mexico, Otero County, into the impact of helicopter noise on Mexican spotted owls supports the belief that spotted owls are generally less affected than most other raptor species by nearby, non-threatening human activity. It appears that spotted owls are unwilling to leave the nest during the incubation and nestling phase. Adult spotted owls are more likely to flush in response to manipulations later in the reproductive cycle, indicating a decline in adult defensive or protective behaviour as juveniles grow older.
