Effects of microhabitat and microclimate selection on adult survivorship of the lesser prairie-chicken

Article Abstract:

Microhabitat and microclimate characteristics at bird-centered and random points at the Southwestern and Northwestern edges of the species range were measured. The findings suggested that survivorship was higher for adults that chose microhabitat with a higher cover of shrubs and grasses and a higher density of vegetation.

Location and success of lesser prairie-chicken nests in relation to vegetation and human disturbance

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted in Southwestern Kansas, on two sand-sagebrush prairie areas managed for livestock production from 1997 to 2002. The findings suggested that grass height, sagebrush plant density, and sagebrush height were the most important vegetation characteristics influencing nest success.

Age-specific survival and probable causes of mortality in female Lesser Prairie-Chickens

Article Abstract:

The effects of age and season on the survival of female Lesser Prairie-Chickens in southwestern Kansas, U.S., are examined. The lower survival rates are found in Lesser Prairie-Chickens nesting females during nesting and brood-rearing periods because of predation.
