Effects of song overlapping and alternating on nocturnally singing nightingales

Article Abstract:

Effects of song alternation and song overlapping on the nocturnal singing behaviour nightingales were examined. Songs were timed differently depending on whether playback songs overlapped their songs or alternated with them. Subjects sang at higher rates and interrupted more songs during overlapping. It is suggested that the timing of songs and song overlapping during alternating signing carries important information.

Auditory distance assessment of singing conspecifics in Carolina wrens: the role of reverberation and frequency-dependent attenuation

Article Abstract:

Carolina wrens, Thryothorus ludovicianus, independently use reverberation and high-frequency attenuation to estimate the distance of a singing conspecific. Birds use auditory distance perception to protect their territories, and adapt to the changing acoustic features of the environment. The birds judge the distance of a singer by using the difference in the intensities of the song they receive.

Assessment of auditory distance in a territorial songbird: accurate feat or rule of thumb?

Article Abstract:

Research is presented to demonstrate the assessment of auditory distance in male territorial Fringilla coelebs chaffinches. Digitally-degraded birdsong is broadcast over a loudspeaker at varying distances to emulate an approaching rival.
