El Nino Southern Oscillation and tuna in the western Pacific

Article Abstract:

There are connections between apparent spatial shifts in the skipjack tuna population in the Pacific Ocean and large zonal displacements of the western equatorial Pacific warm pool that take place during El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. Observations of skipjack relative abundance were correlated with a proxy for location of the zone of convergence of surface-layer water masses on the eastern edge of the western Pacific warm pool, the 29 degrees C sea surface temperature isotherm, and with the southern oscillation index.

Influence of mountain ranges on the mid-latitude atmosphere response to El Nino events

Article Abstract:

Mountains affect the response of extratropical regions to El Nino events. Mountains reduce the velocity of a column of rotating air and the compressed air is spread horizontally. El Nino events affect weather patterns by producing wave-like disturbances of vorticity that reach the mid-latitudes. The secondary interactions of these waves with mid-latitude mountains are responsible for the actual flow patterns of wind. Vortex compression in the Himalayan-Tibetan region produce such vorticity contributions in the mid-latitudes.

Global impact of the 1789 - 93 El Nino

Article Abstract:

Research shows that the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) droughts of 1789 were very severe in comparison to others ENSO events. Evidence suggests that a very cold winter period may have preceded the 1789 ENSO. Rainfall measurements taken from Samulcottah, Andhra Pradesh, India, are given for the years 1788, 1789, 1790, 1791 and 1792. Monsoon data comparisons can be made in assessing ENSO events.
