Element-selective imaging of atomic columns in a crystal using STEM and EELS

Article Abstract:

The atomic-column imaging of a crystal specimen of La, Mn and O in the layered manganite [La.sub.1.2][Sr.sub.1.8][Mn.sub.2][O.sub.7] visualized as two-dimensional images is demonstrated. The studies were conducted using localized inelastic scattering and a stabilized scanning transmission electron microscope.

Experimental detection of alpha particles from the radioactive decay of natural bismuth

Article Abstract:

The only naturally occurring isotope of bismuth, 209Bi, is commonly regarded as the heaviest stable isotope. It is characterized by an exceptionally long lifetime and is metastable with respect to alpha-decay, like most other heavy nuclei abundant in nature.

Abrupt onset of a second energy gap at the superconducting transition of underdoped Bi2212

Article Abstract:

The discovery of a second energy gap at the superconducting transition of underdoped [Bi.sub.2][Sr.sub.2]Ca[Cu.sub.2][O.sub.8+[delta]] (Bi2212) is analyzed. The gap is found to be temperature dependent and is situated in the nodal direction.
