Energy saving in huddling penguins

Article Abstract:

Huddling in groups among penguins enables the animals to conserve sufficient energy to survive the Antarctic winter while incubating eggs. This was concluded in a study of penguins in the Pointe Geologie colony in Adele Land, wherein 36 male penguins were weighed, blood samples taken and injected with deuterated water to be able to monitor body-water loss. By huddling, males were found to be able to maintain a metabolic rate 25% below that of an individual bird at thermoneutrality. Those that were isolated and unable to huddle failed to survive the long fast required for successful incubation.
