Engineered male sterility

Article Abstract:

The cytoplasmic male sterility phenomenon involves insertion of a gene (phaA) from the bacterium Acinetobacter into plant chloroplasts with a promoter psbA and other regulatory elements. The phenomenon is useful for artificial suppression of pollination, genetically engineered suppression of male fertility into elements in the cytoplasm and for selective restoration of male fertility.
