Entire E. coli genome sequenced - at last

Article Abstract:

The seven-year-old Escherichia coli genome sequencing project conducted by Takashi Horiuchi in Japan and Fred Blattner in the US has been completed. The two independent Japanese and American groups begun their research in 1982 to determine the evolution of microbial virulence. The US research group led by Fred Blattner utilized five high-throughput Applied Biosystems automated sequencing machines to sequence 2.8 megabases of the Escherichia coli K 12 strain. Furthermore, data on the Escherchia coli genome have been transmitted to public databases.

Europeans benefit from collaboration

Article Abstract:

Innovative academic projects are providing new employment opportunities for plant biotechnologists in Europe. One of the most significant developments has been work by AMICA Science EEIG, a consortium of leading plant scientists. This body has boosted scientific exchange between European research teams, and has coordinated work on plant molecular genetics at 130 laboratories under the European Union's third Framework Programme.
